Headlines the world over are pretty grim these days. From declines in the economy to turmoil in the world markets and 2012 predictions that don’t look any better than 2011′s, things seem to go from bad to worse.
If you believe what you hear in the media.
But guess what: there’s a really good chance that you can tune out all the negative chatter and create something absolutely terrific in the new year.
In spite of what’s going on out there.
And, even, because of what’s going on out there.
Listen. I’m not saying that things are pretty grim. But as Einstein once pointed out, you can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking that created them in the first place.
Think about it: If millions of people are hurting (and I have no doubt that they are), then small business success is not only possible – it’s highly probable – if you can provide a solution to their problems.
But in order to get into problem-solving mode, you need to have a clear head and be open to creative inspiration, and you need to be absolutely vigilant about the kinds of thoughts you’re entertaining (hint: positive thoughts equal positive outcomes).
So. Are you ready to give the power of positive thoughts a shot at working wonders in your life and helping you to achieve small business success? Here’s a two-part challenge to get you going:
1) Over the course of one month, turn off the news. Ignore headlines, turn off the t.v.. In fact, quit it all, cold turkey, for 30 days.
Does this bring up resistance in you? When I first did a media fast, I, too, worried that I was being socially irresponsible if I didn’t at least have some sort of idea as to what was going on in the world.
But guess what? Things kept on without me. Stocks rose and fell, weather happened (all over the globe!), babies were born, and a few old people lived into their 100s.
And while all of that was happening, I was giving myself a mental break from worry and stress and “worst-case scenario” thinking that, surprise, surprise, seemed to do very little but attract what I was worried about into my reality.
That leads to the second half of this challenge:
2) For the next 30 days, once a day in the morning and again at night, meditate, reflect, or just follow your breathing – whatever works for you to get into a place of silent awareness. Leave open the newly-created space you’ve made by tuning out the media for inspiration, and it won’t matter what approach you take.
Keep in mind that getting quiet takes practice (hence the 30-day challenge), but if you commit to a schedule and stick to it, you’ll find yourself looking forward to the quiet time, and showing up ready and eager to see what kinds of things come up.
Also, be sure to act on the insights and ideas that come to you in the quiet. There is enormous power in moving on inspiration, so don’t hesitate.
So. Up to the challenge? I know that there are plenty of opportunities out there to grow and thrive. To see them, you just need to look with fresh eyes and an open mind.
Here’s to your small business success in 2012, built on positive thoughts, moments of quiet reflection, and the action steps that result.
