I don’t recall when I learned about The Golden Rule. That’s one of those lessons we pick up at such an early age. It’s also one of those lessons that’s easy to say, but sometimes so difficult to be mindful of when we’re being pressured by life’s challenges.

I was much later when I first came across The Platinum Rule. The first person I ever heard speak about it was Dr. Tony Allesandra, who just happens to be an alumni of my alma mater, the University of Connecticut. (Go Huskies!)

If you are not familiar with The Platinum Rule, it is different from The Golden Rule only slightly. Instead of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, the Platinum Rule states that you should treat others as they themselves want to be treated. It’s a very small difference in verbiage, but it is a distinction that translates into drastically different results.

In regards to building a successful MLM business, you must remain mindful of this concept at every point of contact with your target market. You need to have a crystal clear understanding of the core needs and wants of your ideal prospect. And you must develop methods of communicating your solutions to your prospects’ needs in a manner that is suitable to them.

You should also pay attention to the times when your business offerings are not a good fit for a prospect. Way too often, network marketers try to hard sell prospects that have no interest in their products or services. Or even worse, they try to use a relationship for leverage while jamming an opportunity down a prospect’s throat. At best the result is an inability to connect with that prospect, but it often also results in damage to a relationship that otherwise could have been long and mutually beneficial.

Always place the needs and wants of your prospects ahead of your own. As Zig Ziglar says, “If you help enough other people get what they want, you can have anything that you want.” Put your attention on serving the needs of your prospects in the manner that they need and want first.
