Are you working a regular J.O.B and attempting have a top home business? Are you so overwhelmed with things to do that you’re simultaneously doing ten things and none of them too well? We all know the willpower it takes to finish the huge amount of tasks we are faced with day to day. It’s only made more difficult with the amount of available distractions everywhere. The television. iPhone, video games, babies, the comfy chair and so forth are always around to take you off task. There were days where I felt I deserved the “hardest workin’ dude in the world” award only to look around at day’s-end and ask myself, “Er… so what did I accomplish?” Don’t pretend you haven’t been there. Even though I seemed to be an incredibly talented master of multiple tasks, it turned out I was the master of NOT getting multiple tasks done. That’s when I discovered the power of full engagement.

One very important point I picked up is that we not only have a finite amount of willpower to use, but that it is in fact a very small amount. They actually took a couple of groups of people and at them watch an emotional picture. While the film was running, one group was required to repress all display of emotion. Once the movie finished, each group was given a difficult test that would require intense concentration. Repressing emotion requires willpower. As a result, the group with no willpower left in reserve performed terribly on the exam.

What does this mean to you, your life and your home business? It means you should create a series of rituals and do those throughout the day as opposed to reactively running around like a newly headless chicken. Let’s face it… we actually HATE to do most of the things we need to. Depending on willpower alone is a recipe for failure. Save your willpower and build rituals.

What the heck’s a ritual? We aren’t talking about magic or dancing in the moonlight; maybe some meditation and some human sacrifice without any knives or volcanoes. Get it? OK… anyway. Take a series of actions and do them the same way each time and you’ve created a ritual. These “actions” are really just some good habits you’ve created for yourself. Remember, ninety-five percent of the stuff we do everyday is done automatically; no thought needed. How much concentration does it take to take a shower and dry off? Do you think “take right hand turn hot knob… wait… now turn cold knob… now warm… now step in…” Of course not, your shower ritual is a habitual. All you have to do is create rituals chock full of good habits for other parts of the day. Maybe your trying to improve your health and energy level. If so, you might want to try a morning ritual like the one I swiped from Eben Pagan.

My morning ritual takes about two hours and is as follows; I get up, drink some water, brush my teeth, exercise (currently I’m doing P90X but it could easily be the gym or running), meditate, visualize and go over my goals, schedule out my day, eat breakfast and finally take a shower and get dressed. Now because my exercise is buried within the morning ritual, its as indispensable as brushing my teeth. Its a habit. Now obviously, it will take you two to four weeks of performing a ritual for it to be natural, but once it is… you’ve saved your willpower for something else. I don’t believe that 21 day thing is an exact science; It may actually take a few months for you but that’s OK. You’ll know you’ve created a solid habit when it becomes more difficult NOT to do it than it is to do it.

So let’s talk about rituals you can create to boost your home business. Maybe you’re a video marketer and it normally takes you a couple of hours to shoot, edit and post a video. Maybe if you’re focused and not watching Jersey Shore or True Blood at the same time, you can bring the time down to 1 hour. So what you do is come up with a series of steps, an exact time to begin and DO NOT ALLOW ANY DISTRACTIONS. If you’re time to begin is at 5 pm, do it EVERYDAY at 5pm with the same steps. Make it a habit. Soon the random stuff that comes up each day will find itself automatically moved to accommodate your new habits. And once your good habit filled rituals start to take over your day, you’ll be amazed at what you will accomplish.

Creating more than one or two rituals at a time may be too much because you’ll need some willpower to get them started so instead build slowly. Full Engagement with your highest value activities will do wonders for your home business.

When I first started my network marketing business, I had a real fear of approaching people to join the business. Other people called it the “Fear of Cold Calling” and there was an element of truth to that. Everyone has a streak of xenophobia in them, that fear of the strange or alien, and if you are outside your comfort zone, EVERYTHING seems strange and alien.

This phobia was confusing to me at first as I was sure that I liked meeting people, and loved talking to them. My problem was more a fear of rejection of my business ides – and once I figured out the issues, I was able to go a long way to fixing them.

One of my mentors teaches strategies for business. Al says that any business or personal situation can be examined and the various outcomes calculated and assessed. From that point strategies can be devised which can optimise the outcomes. Al believes that the optimum outcome should be a win-win situation for all parties. If you follow that belief to a logical conclusion, strategies should incorporate the other parties wants and needs where they can be deduced, or guessed.

By doing this you gain objectivity, and the entire situation is examined without any bias. This tends to empower all parties, without pressures. The interactions and negotiations will be more relaxed, open and without antipathy.

If this sounds complex, don’t panic. Techniques are available to help set the strategies. I use a chart which some will recognise as a Ben Franklin to identify the various factors at play.

My first step is to identify what I want to achieve from the meeting/call or conversation. I do that by identifying my goals, the emotions I expect to experience, and the expectations I have. This takes practice and some thought, as while goals and expectations are concrete, emotions are tricky little suckers. They affect everything we do, at work, at home, with family, friends – and with our prospects and customers.

More difficult is to work on what the other parties expect, what their goals may. Their emotions should be considered in the context of the possible outcomes.

Imagine this: I am to call a prospect, to see if he will be making an application to join my primary business.

I want to find out if they are going to fill in an application – if they are to help them do so; if the aren’t ready to do so, I would want them to stay on as a newsletter subscriber.

I need to be aware that I could be excited, afraid or disappointed, depending on the possible outcomes.

My positive expectation is that my lead will complete the application, the negative that they are not interested at all, and should they not be ready to submit the application, I would expect that they would stay on the list. I expect they will avoid money decisions, will be suspicious and could even be hostile and rude.

They would no doubt want to avoid commitment, and find out what the call is about without giving anything away. They could be excited about the opportunity, afraid I am going to rip them off, or take advantage of them. They are probably expecting the hard sell to which they would say no, they will expect to learn more about the opportunity, and the may expect that a decision will be needed.

By deliberately, consciously predicting these behaviours I am able to plan for them, and could use surprise or other tactics to break them away from their (probably unrealised) expectations so that we can partake of a negotiation based on mutual respect and acceptance of the other parties’ goals emotions and expectations..

One of the areas in my business that was neglected in the early days, was responding to questions that inevitably arose in the normal interaction with customers colleagues and leads. My knowledge of my business at the outset was patchy, and I saw many of the questions as challenges, rather than what they were, requests for information. Any response from a potential customer is a valuable contact. That response that should be analysed, and potential answers archived for future use.

Here is a powerful technique you can use to improve your responses to questions about your online marketing business.

1. List the questions you have received. Don’t stop there – list all the potential questions you can think of. Brainstorm, check your emails, read forums, get as large a list of potential game breakers as you can.

2. Categorize. Sorting the questions will give you insight into the frquency you will receive them, and to the importance of each. Some you will give more weight than others, but do not neglect what you see as trivial – your customer/lead/colleague may not think the question is trivial.

3. Prepare a response to each question. Try to think of several ways to answer, keeping in mind the KISS principle. Some of the questions will come from people who are really confused. Some will want specific answers in connection to THEIR agenda. Others will be wanting to make statements to impress with their knowledge. Each answer should include a request or a trigger for another contact, such as another question, or an offer to provide more information.

4. Check your answers for mistakes, and consider if you might be considered aggressive, or antagonistic. Often, your fist impulse is to fire back an acid reply, but resist that temptation. All questions, no matter how trivial, annoying or senseless are a valuable contact, a potential client/prospect or friend asking for help.

5. A few days after you have answered, contact the respondent again and ask if you were ably to be of help – ask if there is something else you can do for them. The feedback will be invaluable.

If you practice this technique, your skill will grow. You will become the “go to guy” when it comes to internet marketing business. Your business & your success will grow.
