Greed, what does the word mean? Greed can basically be defined as a sense of selfishness and an overall concern for oneself and wealth beyond anyone or anything else in the world. This is why many say, true evil is not money, but greed. However, most individuals have a sense of guilt, at least in times of such matters; When it comes to corporate greed, however, that is another story entirely. Therefore, it is good for one to know the core values of any business or corporation with which one intends on doing business.
With the recent government ruling in the United States that corporations have the same inherit right as individuals, a Supreme Court decision with which many citizens as well as the overall administration disagree, the door has left been wide open for even more abuse in this area, especially in America but also world wide. This is because along with elections which can now be easily bought and sold through a variety of unlimited contributions, corporations can often spend more in the way of campaigns than can help individuals. Therefore, while individuals can still donate to a variety of elections and campaigns, it is the large corporation with the money that is going to have the most influence when it comes election day.
While some hire younger workers in order to cut costs and wide profit margins, others often let individuals nearing retirement age go for one of many reasons, none of which often is the truth. For when one nears retirement age, the company may fear that the individual is more prone to accidents or death, which in fact is a consideration. However, if an individual has been with a company their whole life, been on time every day and never took a sick day off, many would still be let go as they near the typical retirement age of 65.
However, it is when one does not wish to do so, that it becomes a problem. Sadly, this is a problem for many workers today who are paid either at or just under minimum wage with no pay for required overtime. Some companies attempt to cover this up by appointing a salary which when divided often is equal to or just above minimum wage. However, still without pay for required overtime. Therefore, before accepting any job, permanent, temporary or otherwise, one needs to understand the payment schedule and if and how one is paid with regards to working overtime. In doing so, one knows from the beginning what to expect in the way of overtime pay.
Such practices are found in corporations of all sizes, from the smallest to the largest, as corporate greed does not discriminate. This is because not only does corporate greed impact retiring individuals who suddenly have no avenue to retirement income or individuals just starting who are only trying to make ends meet, the impact continues to trickle down through society at large. Thus, leading to local store closures and other such events when a community begins to feel the effect of corporate greed on the citizenry of such an area.
As the driving force behind many corporations world wide, corporate greed is a world wide problem, not just in the United States. Also, while there are a large number of corporations existing solely on corporate greed; there are also businesses and corporations who are honest and whom do care for their employees and investors. In addition, with the current growth in learning about green engineering, there are also opportunities for both employment and investment in many of these areas today.
Last but not least, this excessive issue with corporate greed runs across many corporate platforms which is awakening many an entrepreneur to start their own home-based business, or at the very least work from home where possible. However, working at home is only good if one is working for someone other than one of the many greedy corporations which exist today. For, many of these corporations are so greedy not only do they hire direct employees at rates much lower than others doing the same work, there are also those that have moved offshore to avoid paying taxes to federal governments. An issue that has also become prevalent over the last several years in the United States as well as a few other countries. Therefore, such corporations, especially those based out of the U. S. Which only exist to gain as much as possible through the work of others working at wages, often equating to less than minimum wage, are no doubt the greediest of all.
While a problem worldwide, it appears the United States has one of the severest issues when it comes to corporate greed. This is because lately companies in the United States have started a trend in which a company can lay off a worker near retirement age and replace that individual with one who has less experience; which also equates to less money being paid out by the company in the way of salaries. One might see such a trend as double-indemnity when it comes to the impact of greed with regards to an employer.
How does one overcome corporate greed? One can avoid becoming associated with corporate greed, by avoiding the corporations which use such greedy tactics to fulfill purposes for their own well being rather than respecting and appreciating both short and long-term employees. Also, one must ask all the important questions when either interviewing or taking a job relating to salary. These include questions about overtime and retirement pay along with benefits being offered by the company. In doing so, one knows up front what type of corporation they are about to become employed by or not, what type of benefits and pay one can expect and whether or not the corporation has seen success based on sacrifice and self-worth or through other more selfish means.
So, whether one has been effected directly by corporate greed, has seen a fellow employee be laid off at retirement age or has heard a new employee talking about working for low wages, one has every right to research and question the company regarding same. However, it is best that individuals handle such circumstances through an attorney or at the very least a mediator. In doing so, one can start a cycle in which eliminating corporate greed, along with the corporations who thrive on such business practices becomes a reality. For then, and only then, will the corporate world be able to find acceptance and respect from others in the marketplace which include consumers, employees and investors alike. To this end, it is to the benefit of any corporation practicing such poor business tactics to review their company procedures and revise those practices in such a way where employees feel honored and appreciated for their work, unlike the many employees today, needing work so bad they will take whatever they can get. Often times, even if that means at the expense of another individual, or making less than minimum wage.
